Every living organism requires congestion free blood flow in the arteries to maintain the balance between the different body organs and also for its very survival. Similarly, every city requires a better transport network for the movement of people and other commodities between different areas. Poor city planning is the bane of the urban development process in Kerala. Many of the present urban problems could have been totally avoided if proper steps had been initiated much earlier.

The emerging Kochi metropolis immediately needs the completion of a ring road to control the movement of vehicles in the outer zone of the city. This will minimize the pressure in the middle as well as the inner city areas that is now badly suffering from traffic congestion, a major cause for severe pollution in the city. This ring road will work as a secondary artery for the future city that is likely to emerge by the 2020s. To speed up the developments in real estate Kochi city‘s senior citizens and its development authorities must take a bold step forward.

The roads radiating from the city will further ease the traffic congestion by connecting through the ring road which will not allow the external traffic to enter into the city. It will ease about 40 percent of the traffic flow in the inner and middle zones of the city, which will indirectly reduce the pollution level in the central part of the city.

Likewise, the railway traffic should be diversified to new stations by releasing pressure from the South railway station. It will also reduce traffic congestion at certain points in the city. The steps involved to improve the road conditions includes widening of roads in the inner zones, maintenance of roads in the inner, middle and outer zones and the creation of parking zones, especially, in the inner and middle zones. The most important issue to be taken up is to ensure that the traffic flow is maintained in a disciplined manner through the traffic lights in all the prominent junctions.
